| Citywide permit parking update |
[Dec. 30th, 2009|11:43 am] |
So the new citywide permit parking signs now appear to be posted. The new rules will be enforced starting January 4th.
From what I've seen, they did a rather sloppy job placing the signs. Some blocks have no new signs. Sometimes there are new signs just a few feet apart, or at weird heights on the pole. And on streets like Elm, where they replaced old restrictions (like 2 hour parking except by permit 8 am - 6 pm except Sundays) with new ones, I've seen blocks with all 4 combinations of new and old signs (new only, old only, both, and neither).
Tom Champion's post at http://community.livejournal.com/davis_square/2011317.html explicitly says the major-street permit and time limits are not in effect on Sundays, but the signs don't reflect this. They just say "2 hour parking except by permit 8 am - 2:30 am, permit-only 2:30 am - 8 am", without saying "except Sunday". You'd think they'd have proofread the signs before they spent thousands of dollars posting them them all over the city.
And I still can't believe the extent to which they imposed the permit-only rules, even in industrial areas. And this might be illegal under state law, since http://www.mass.gov/legis/laws/mgl/40-21.htm just says towns can ban parking in front of a house except by residents of that house. |

| Seeking decent real estate agent |
[Dec. 30th, 2009|11:31 am] |
I think it's about time I bought something, probably a condo, maybe a house, but somewhere in Cambridge/Somerville and close to Davis/Porter.
Looking for some third-party, unaffiliated references for agents that are knowledgeable about the neighborhood. In other words, not someone you are related to or really good friends with (or yourself, if you happen to be an agent). No offense, I just want an untainted reference as this is brand new territory for me.
Much obliged for any input.
Cheers, Murph |

| Function drinks and old flavors? |
[Dec. 30th, 2009|08:57 am] |
Anyone familiar with which stores might have a large unsold stock of Function beverages? They used to have them at Target. They sell them in Shaw's, Whole Foods, Market Basket (in the coolers), Tedeschi's, and probably a bunch of other corner stores. But the issue is that a lot of the interesting flavors/supplements became very hard to find and may be discontinued, so I'm looking for the odd store that might have a lot of unsold stock. | Prepaid phone cards, local bodegas |
[Dec. 29th, 2009|09:28 pm] |
Looking for some belated stocking stuffers for my family, and in the past, phone cards have been a big hit. I know this group is mostly iPhone types, but my Nana is a landline type and doesn't have unlimited minutes. Just need something to call within the US without any miscellaneous fees, but don't want to drive all the convenience store clerks nuts examining their cards. Perhaps someone here has a card they're particularly fond of.( Read more... ) |

| Poutine |
[Dec. 29th, 2009|03:14 pm] |
A freezing day like this reminds me to share my recent discovery that poutine has been added to the menu at Eat At Jumbo's in Ball Square. Comfort soaked in gravy.
The owner told me (when I asked) that he unfortunately doesn't have local access to authentic cheese curds (the ones from Trader Joe's suck). But he substitutes what he described to me as "Vermont cabot," whatever that may be, and the flavor and consistency is similar to what I've had in Montreal. Gooey. Greasy. Glorious. |

| Mail on cold days. |
[Dec. 29th, 2009|02:27 pm] |
Hi, I did not see the mail person on my street today. Are there any rules about not delivering mail on very cold days like today? I would hate being the mail person delivering mail with real feel temperature under zero. I was just wondering if it's codified in some rule. |

| Celebrate New Year's Day on Prospect Hill |
[Dec. 29th, 2009|11:57 am] |

On New Year's Day each year, the Somerville Historic Preservation Commission celebrates the raising of the first American flag to feature thirteen red and white horizontal stripes. Know as “the Flag of Grand Union,” it was first raised by George Washington over the Continental Army’s encampment on Prospect Hill during the siege of Boston in 1776.
The event begins at 11:30 am at the City Hall parking lot, where re-enactors (including 'George Washington' on horseback), fife and drum players, and local elected officials assemble for a short procession. The parade reaches Prospect Hill Park at noon, where there will be a ceremony that includes raising a replica of the First Flag onto the top of Prospect Hill Tower. Coffee, hot cider, and other refreshments will be available. In past years, people have been allowed to climb to the top of the tower, but I can't guarantee you'll be able to do it this year.
I've been going to this event for a few years and have always enjoyed it. To get there from Davis Square, take the #88 or #90 bus from Davis Square at 11:30 am, and get off either at City Hall (if you want to join the parade) or at the first bus stop on McGrath Highway (if you just want to walk up the hill yourself to the ceremony). Sometimes the bus ends up driving behind the parade.
Here's a the official city press release for the event. |

| Nutritionist near Davis or surrounding areas? |
[Dec. 28th, 2009|02:14 pm] |
In support of my New Years resolution to eat better, does anyone know of a nutritionist that they know and love? I need someone who can help plan meals working with my unique set of constraints (such as there are not a lot of vegetables that I like and I don't like to cook).
Near Davis would be nice but I'll take anyone within reasonable driving/parking or T accessible.
Thanks! |

| Can I borrow someones woodshop for a few hours? |
[Dec. 27th, 2009|06:26 pm] |
I'd like to make a wooden ring for my girlfriend out of ebony - I have a broken upright bass with a nice ebony fingerboard that's otherwise useless. So, I'm wondering if someone would allow me use of their woodshop (basic tools and perhaps a wood lather) for a few hours so I can make this ring..
I'm reasonably competent in a woodshop - I wouldn't need much supervision...
Willing to pay for the time used...
Thanks! Derek |

| Trash-day curb Alert: TV stand, moving boxes, kitchen trash can |
[Dec. 27th, 2009|04:48 pm] |
On the curb in front of 24 Washburn Ave in Cambridge, just down from Teele:
* A bunch of moving boxes. Already broken down. Not rain-damaged.
* Crate & Barrel TV stand. Wheels, two shelves plus a top that will hold about a 30" tube TV or a larger flat-screen. Light weight but sturdy. Lift it from the bottom, though. The shelves stay in place fine if you're pushing it around, but if you lift them up they'll come right off.
* Perfectly adequate, totally clean, white plastic 13 gallon kitchen trash can with swinging lid. Doesn't fit in my kitchen.
* Perfectly adequate, totally clean, totally boring white bathroom size 3-gallon trashcan. |

| Wanted: band to play The Steve Katsos Show, 12/29 |
[Dec. 27th, 2009|02:57 pm] |
I know it's seriously short notice, but the Steve Katsos Show, a talk/variety show taped in Arlington, MA and broadcast throughout New England (including Somerville Community Access Television), is looking for a musical act to play on Tuesday night, 12/29.
We had a musical act cancel on us last minute, so if you could perform for us, please respond to this message and I will provide more details.
The only requirement is that the act has an album to promote (CD, iTunes, CD Baby, etc.), or has shows in the area.
Check out clips here: http://www.youtube.com/user/TheSteveKatsosShow
Appreciate any assistance here.
Thanks, JM |

| Cloth scraps |
[Dec. 26th, 2009|10:46 am] |
I have about a garbarge bag's worth of scraps to give away. Only that much in volume because there's one medium-poofy scrap (soft soft blue-gray faux something-or-other), and one downright furry one (the navy blue one in the photos). Do you want it? Comment and I'll leave it on my front porch, corner of Packard and Powder House Blvd (10-12 min walk from Davis, 7-8 min walk from Powder House Square).
Just in case more than one person wants it, please wait to get a reply from me before coming over.
